How To Sharpen Lawn Mower Blades

How to Sharpen Lawn Mower Blades

If you are not completely satisfied with the way your Lawn Mower Mows your grass, then maybe this information will help you.  How to Sharpen Lawnmower Blades?  It is very easy

Tools You’ll Need:

·      Wrench

·      Grinder

Step1

If you are using a walk behind lawn mower, then you'll need to turn the entire lawnmower on its side so that you can access the nut holding the blade on.  Be sure not to turn the Lawn Mower onto its side too far so you don't leak any oil or fuel onto the ground.  You will want to find the correct size wrench to loosen and remove the nut holding the blade. After you loosened the blade it will be free and can be removed. You should always note which side of the blade is on top before removing.

Step2

If you are using a riding lawnmower then you might need to remove the mower deck from the tractor. This will allow access to the blades.  If you don't want to remove the deck then you will need to use a jack to jack the mower up so the blades can be accessed.   Using a wrench, you can remove all the nuts that hold the blades onto the spindles. Next Remove blades. Note which side of the blade is on top before removing.

Step3

Examine blades. Look for excessive wear & tear in the blades. If the mower blades are extremely bad, you may need to purchase new blades.  If your blades are in pretty good shape, only dull then you are ready for the next step.

Step4

Take your blades to your grinder. A small one will work just fine for this job.  A handheld grinder works better than a table mounted grinder for most homeowner applications.  This is because homeowner table grinders are not usually set up with a guide for lawn mower blades. Turn grinder on.  Always be sure to wear the proper protective equipment and always consult owners manuals before using any piece of equipment.

Step5

If you are using a handheld grinder then you will want to use a c-clamp to hold the blade securely when grinding on it.  Once you have the blade held securely with a c- clamp you can begin grinding.  Be sure to hold the grinder steady.  If you are using a table mounted grinder then you want to start out by placing the beveled end of the blade (the part that actually cuts the grass) upside down against the grinding wheel. Always keep the blade moving along the wheel. This is what will sharpen the blade. Keep moving the blade to the left and then to the right several times and notice that this is creating a shiny look at the cutting point. Create a shiny look on all of the cutting surface for best results. Flip the blade and do this same thing to the other end of blade.

Step6

Carefully run your finger along the edge of the newly sharpened blade to feel sharpness. Uniformity is what you are attempting to feel at this point.  Be extremely careful not to cut yourself.  If your blade does not suit your needs, then run blade against grinder wheel again until you are satisfied.

Step7

Return to the lawnmower with your sharpened blades and re-install them. Make sure the nut that holds the blade on is tight.
